8th World Summit on Arts & Culture

Arts & Cultural Entrepreneur’s Lab (MaUS) by JKKN

Date: April 17th -19th, 2019

Description:  A three-day mentorship programme to teach, guide and coach arts and cultural entrepreneurs on branding and social media marketing. The entrepreneurship program has culminated into the forming of Malaysian Association of Arts & Cultural Entrepreneurship in which Kamini Manikam was voted to be the Vice-Treasurer.

Strategic Development and Action Plan – National Cultural Policy

Date: May 2nd – 3rd, 2019

Description: A think tank session organised by Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture to get insights and suggestions from arts practitioners in Malaysia on the revision of National Cultural Policy.

Thillana Mohanambal Dance Drama

Date: June 22nd & 23rd, 2019

Description: Thillana Mohanambal (The Dance Queen Mohanambal)is a silver screen masterpiece which hit commercial success in 1968 and still reigns in the hearts of classic movie lovers. The Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School (TKI) will be staging an adaptation of this masterpiece as a dance drama, conceptualized using the fine art of Bharatanatyam, the school’s forte for over 50 years now.

With decades of history in the production of dance dramas, the school is the first to take up this monumental task of bringing to live stage this unique musical drama film that was originally written as a serial story by the prolific writer Kothamangalam Subbu and featured in the copies of ‘Ananda Vikatan’ a weekly in the years of 1957 to 1958. Kamini Manikam plays the lead role, Mohanambal the danseuse.

Surpanaka:  The Wrath of a Dravidian Princess

Date: July 20th, 2019

Description: A dance theatrical production by Asthana Arts as a tribute to their founder, the late Master Ravi Shanker. Kamini Manikam plays the role of Pratyangira Devi, the Goddess who holds the combined destructive power of Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti. 

Ketuk-Ketuk Festival

Navarathiri Festival 2019

Description: Navarathiri is a much awaited and celebrated affair by artistes and art lovers around the world who dwell themselves in the depth and intricacies of Indian music and dance.  This auspicious festival is celebrated for 10 days with daily prayers, followed by dance and music recital by the students of Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School and other guest artistes.

Artistlabs Creative Accelerator 2018

Festival of Bharathanatyam 2018

Short + Sweet Malaysia - Dance Competition

Description: This annual dance competition organised by KLPAC attracts participation from both Malaysian and overseas dancers, regardless of the genres and styles of dance. Kamini Manikam’s student, Yachana Sudhagar who participated in the Junior Dance category won ‘Best Dancer’ award.

TKI’s Navarathiri Festival 2018

LIPSTICK Retold – Solo Bharathanatyam Recital (Tokyo Performing Arts Market 2017)

Description: LIPSTICK Retold is a new age Bharathanatyam recital encompassing selection of dance pieces from two successful series of LIPSTICK, premiered in Malaysia in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Themed on social issues, this production will exhibit poetic work in various languages, further stressing on humanity and universal love that bind us all together; throwing aside creed, gender, ethnicity, social status, religion, and political beliefs. A special highlight of the programme will be a Bharathantayam item choreographed to Japanese compositions with live singing and narrating of popular Japanese stories. This production is sponsored and supported by The Japan Foundation Asia Center.

Temples of Malaysia

Description: Carnatic vocal concert by Thiepaan Raaj, features pieces composed on the various temples reflecting the origins and growth of the Hindu religion in Malaysia from ancient times.  The concert will also showcase two lively solo dance pieces relating to the theme. All through the concert, pictures of temples will be flashed on the screen enabling the audience to experience the beauty of the structures alongside learning about them from the songs and narrations in English.  Organised by WOWGA Creativarium.

Solo Bharathanatyam Recital - Thanjavur Chinna Melam Festival 2017

Description:  An hour of solo Bharathanatyam recital with live music. This is an annual event organized by the Thanjavur Heritage Arts & Cultural Academy. The Founder & Principal of Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School, ‘Nattuva Thilagam’ Srimathi Indira Manikam will be awarded the ‘Kitappa Pillai Memorial Award’ for her services in propagating the Tanjavur style of Bharathanatyam in Malaysia.

Sri Valli Thirumanam Dance Drama (Premiere show)

Description: A dance drama that depicts the story of the handsome Muruga and his antics in winning the heart of the tribal princess, Valli. With a team of 110 members, this dance drama exhibits brilliant choreography, magnificent music performed by over 60 dancers, complete with colourful costumes, artistic set designs and vibrant lighting. Presented by Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School in collaboration with NLFCS Tan Sri K.R. Soma Arts & Culture Foundation.

Exploring Feminist Bodies

Date: July 23rd, 2017

Description: This talk gathers a host of speakers to talk about feminist embodiment, calling for an appreciation for one’s own body and to explore the various ways of how to do so. Each speaker will also conduct activities as part of the exercise to encourage feminist embodiment such as yoga, martial arts, traditional Indian dancing and more. Organised by Projek Dialog.

India-ASEAN Youth Summit 2017

Teacher- The Tradition Bearer

Description: A documentary film release by award-winning filmmaker, Indrani Kopal. This documentary revolves around the life story of ‘Nattuva Thilagam’ Srimathi Indira Manikam and the challenges she has faced while being in the dance field for the last 51 years in Malaysia. Established in 1966, Tanjai Kamalaa Indira Dance School has been recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Longest Operating Dance School in Malaysia’. Dancing with Shiva
